Bush Bite #16 - 29 Sep 2004
The latest democracies?

A current Bush television ad declares, "this Olympics, there will be two more free nations - and two fewer terrorist regimes."

Putting aside for the moment the "terrorist regime" definition, let's take a look at what it means to be a "free nation."

Both Iraq and Afghanistan are racked by insurgencies and warlordism and dependent on US troops for what passes for security. Both countries are under martial law and their leaders are unelected US appointees. Both countries are squalid economic basket cases, with the vast majority of the populace unemployed--or, in the case of Afghanistan, cultivating opium poppies.

Maybe Bush has forgoten that to be "free," a nation has to elect its rulers. But then again, he would miss that connection.

Something you can do
Time to take a Republican out for lunch. I'm sure you know one: there might even be one in your house! Spend a few bucks, don't bring up politics, be nice. A little kindness can go a long way. Remember, Republicans are simply misinformed.
