Bush Bite #10 - 23 Sep 2004
Evolution: a new-fangled and crazy idea

"The jury is still out on evolution," said George W. Bush, who favors equal time spent in science classes covering "creationism."

What Bush fails to understand is that "creationism" is a faith-based mythology. There is nothing scientific about it. You either believe it or you don't.

As for the jury being "out," Darwin's theories of evolution are not just backed up by over a hundred years of science; they are the basis for hundreds of biological-related industries. Thousands owe their jobs to that wacky but trendy idea of evolution.

Scientists now warn about excessive use of antibiotics, for they have proven effective in helping engender antibiotic-resistant strains of microorganisms. The AIDS virus, HIV, has already been shown to mutate and adapt to different populations. The coyote population is making a comeback across the country, now better adapted to surviving human predators.

I'm not sure which jury Bush is referring to, perhaps the one in "Inherit the Wind." But for a Yale-educated sitting President of the free world, he shows himself to be severely out-of-step with global mainstream scientific thought.

Something you can do
See if a local theater company is staging a performance of "Inherit the Wind" this fall and get involved. If not, take it on yourself! Volunteer to do a reading at a coffeehouse or a school, or if you're up for some serious fun, organize a cast and aim for a mid-October performance.
